Macramé is a form of textile-making using knotting rather than weaving or knitting. This ancient technique reached Italy, particularly Genoa, during the 11th century, in a time in which trading commerce was flourishing. The technique was originally used by the sailors, but then it was took over by women, who gradually changed the original cords to make more and more elegant and delicate works.

Laces and embroidery are often considered as part of Macramé technique, consisting of a combination of different kind of knots. You can use a wide range of materials: silk, linen, cotton, cord… Just choose one and then create whatever you want using the proper knot sequence and you’ll obtain a unique jewel!

In the past centuries those who worked with Macramé technique used only their hands to braid the cords. Nowadays we can count on some very useful tools, first of all the Macramé Board, that will help you keep your work in order. Here at HobbyPerline you can find lots of cords and braids to work with if you want to make something in Macramé technique, as you can see in our Textile Jewelry section!
